Description

This medium sized mug is wheel-thrown and altered, in black stoneware. The dark clay offers a rich depth to it’s accompanying slips and glazes.  The mug is rouletted with a textured pattern. This satisfying process of deeply rolling the roulette across the softly thrown clay, has the effect of gently altering the form and base of the mug to a soft pentagon, providing a satisfying purchase and comfort in the user’s hand. A ball clay salt-slip is ladled to the outside and partially finger-wiped away. The inside has a porcelain slip under willow-ash glaze which breaks from bronze at the rim to duck-egg blue. It is wood-fired to 1300*C. The pot is fired on refractory wadds, hence the five decorative halos to it’s base. This serves to elevate and separate the pots from the shelf to prevent it binding. The clay base itself often forms a glassy finish when salt-glazed or sometimes turns a wonderful semi-matt black where it is sheltered from the flame path.
