This a more modestly sized mug, wheel-thrown and altered in black stoneware. This dark clay offers a rich depth to it’s accompanying slips and glazes. The clay itself often forms a glassy finish when salt-glazed or sometimes it turns a wonderful matt black where it is sheltered from the flame path. The mug is rouletted with a textured pattern. This enjoyable process has the effect of altering the form to a soft pentagon, which in combination with the flared base provides a satisfying purchase and comfort in the user’s hand. The inside has a willow-ash glaze which breaks from bronze at the rim to duck-egg blue. It is wood-fired to 1300*C. The pots are fired on refractory wadds, hence the three decorative halos to it’s base. This serves to elevate and separate the pots from the shelf to prevent it binding.
