Description

We use these lidded jars for a wide range of dry food storage in our kitchen. The slight waste in the bottom of the jar form makes it easy to hold and carry. The finger-wiped and sgraffito-decoration through porcelain and ball-clay salt-slips exposes the clay body underneath. I love the contrasts between each side of the jar, one more fiercely salted where it faces the Phoenix flame path, and the other softer more sheltered surfaces of the other side, brighter and quieter. It is fired on refractory wadds, hence the three decorative halos to it’s base. This serves to elevate and separate the pot from the shelf to prevent it binding during the wood-salt firing process.

The lids are very well fitting, but not air tight. This style of lid is made in one single throw, the right way up. Knob, flange an’ all! Which is very satisfying indeed to make.

Wheel-thrown white stoneware, fired to 1300C. Wood-fired salt-glaze, decorated with salt-slips, orange shino glaze inside.
